The Challenges of app development in the Caribbean and Trinidad and Tobago

The Caribbean is in No shortage of developers, designers and project managers who can oversee the production and development of mobile and web applications in the region. The Caribbean, though slow has lead a decent transition into the new age of technology, but it does not come without it's shortcomings. The Caribbean has been in direct competition in the world when it comes to challenging international contracts for app/web development projects created for their Public and Private Sectors. There is no shortage of Contractors, coming out of India, China, US, UK, EU and Latin America Directly competing for contract bids. The challenge comes mainly to our late entry into the market as local cohorts from different regions. So lets take a look at the history of App Development In one of the larger more developed countries in the region, my home country, Trinidad and Tobago.
It is 2013, Trinidad and Tobago Private sector and recent Graudates from the University of the West Indies have recently Discovered the Focus of Trinidad and Tobago App development and have garnered the attention of multiple international tech startups and Startup organizations with regard to the applications. The First Publizied app in Trinidad that became the forefather of the industry at the time where mobile application development was the foucs, was F1RST. F1RST is the first "Caribbean-built" cutting-edge technological advancement that consists of an online search engine and a fresh and dynamic mobile app aimed at bringing daily information about businesses, services and products at users' fingertips. Being the first Mobile app in Trinidad having one of the most diverse teams at the time, with a huge investment from Digicel, A mobile application in Trinidad, and from multiple private investors. The company's capacity skyrocketed to the heavens.
Marketing was done at the time using barcodes, which were cutting edge at the time for its ability for users to obtain website/app links by using their camera to scan. Though this company attempted to become the leader in Shopping, social media, publication and development, this came at a time when Trinidad Private sector was not in full understanding or comprehension of Social media at the time. Meaning Brand awareness online was somewhat limited and mostly done by Digicel and Bmobile, and to make matters further complicated, mobile phone penetration in 2013 was still somewhat, low. Unfortunately. As time progressed the company liquidated its assets and closed its doors. Though it was the F1RST app and did something revolutionary, it was sadly, too early to launch as the country was not in full comprehension of the platforms potential for the region.

Still Despite its failure, it did create an opportunity and garner the attention of multiple startup organizations at the time to help promote or contribute to the development of Computer Science, Programming literacy and development in Trinidad and Tobago, and the region as a whole, as Google and Facebook Two of the Big 4 in the tech industry took a closer look to Trinidad and began its Steps to recruit and/or help train individuals learning and/or desiring to be better developers by hosting startup competitions, hackathons, development workshops, meetups and fellowships. Ushering in a new era of Developers in the region compentent of creating their own apps without the need to outsource. Which is inadvertedly improved the Potential of The Caribbean outsource potential. Becuase of this, apps like all fours, Doubles Tycoon and Project Gordo, mostly games, have hit on the market for Trinidad and Tobago. Games specifically tailored around the culture of the Country that has made the country proud to appreciate the level of capacity its devs have obtained over time. The app scene in Trinidad, though heavily focused, now in 2020, by corporate related application.

Circa 2018, after the exit of Uber Trinidad and Tobago, Trinidad Unveils TTrideshare. Though not as successful as Uber, it acts as its substitute, with the exchange of increased costs for ease of travel in Trinidad and Tobago, and for fairness to the drivers of the application. Users in Trinidad and Tobago have also been blessed with TTRegs. An online test and guide on how to acquire your Regulations permit and Drivers Permit in Trinidad and Tobago.
